On Friday 23rd June the Abbey School community celebrated World Cultural Diversity Day, by wearing clothing which represented their identity/cultural heritage.
It was so lovely to see a whole range of cultural clothing worn by staff and students, and this provoked dialogues and the sharing of cultural traditions. We thank you all for your generous donations towards our new mental health and wellbeing space.
Throughout the last week of term, all students in years 7-10 attended a house assembly celebrating different cultural traditions around the world, ranging from Kite flying, to Mandala making, to Morris dancing. Students also learned about the mixed heritages of many celebrities, from actors, to footballers, to singers. The house team highlighted the consequences of being ignorant of other people’s cultures, and how the UN works for intercultural dialogue, in order to achieve peace and sustainable development.
Next year we hope to build on this day and engage in other ways to share cultural traditions, perhaps in terms of food, and learning different languages. We thank everyone for supporting this venture and hope to see it go from strength to strength, as the importance of understanding different cultures and customs and engaging in positive and open dialogue becomes ever more important in our multicultural society.
