'Building Character, Confidence and Curiosity Through Opportunity'

Enrichment and Extra-Curricular Activities

At The Abbey School we believe that education extends far beyond the classroom. Our students benefit from a broad, balanced and ambitious curriculum that is enriched by a wide range of extra-curricular and enrichment opportunities designed to develop character, confidence and curiosity.

In line with the Ofsted framework we ensure that our personal development offer is embedded across the curriculum and that every pupil, regardless of background or ability, has access to meaningful experiences that extend their learning, promote wellbeing and enhance cultural capital.

Our extra-curricular programme runs throughout the academic year and includes opportunities in sport, the arts, STEM, leadership, performance, community service and academic extension. Activities are designed to complement classroom learning, strengthen skills such as teamwork and communication and allow students to explore new interests and talents.

Research consistently highlights the impact of enrichment on personal growth. Participation in extra-curricular activities is associated with improved self-esteem, social confidence, attendance, attainment and a stronger sense of belonging within the school community. We see this every day in our students – developing independence, leadership and resilience through participation.

Over the last few years we have relaunched and expanded our clubs offer to ensure all students have the opportunity to engage in activities that help them to be the best they can be. We continue to update our offer each term, ensuring a balance of academic, creative, cultural and wellbeing-focused opportunities.

While every effort is made to maintain consistency, some clubs may be added or adapted mid-term to respond to student interest and staffing availability.

Duke of Edinburgh Award

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) is a world-renowned youth achievement programme that encourages young people to challenge themselves, develop new skills and make a positive contribution to their community.

At The Abbey School all students in Years 9, 10, 12 and 13 are invited to take part. Students can begin the award at Bronze (age 14+), progress to Silver (15+) and ultimately Gold (16+).

To achieve their award, students complete four sections:

  • Physical – developing fitness and wellbeing
  • Skills – learning or improving a personal skill or talent
  • Volunteering – supporting others in the community
  • Expedition – preparing for and completing a team journey in the countryside
(Gold participants also complete a Residential section.)

We are proud that more than 140 students and alumni are currently working towards their awards, demonstrating commitment, teamwork and leadership. Expeditions take place during the spring and summer terms while students independently plan and complete the other sections in their own time.

Why Enrichment Matters

At The Abbey School, enrichment is an integral part of our Personal Development offer and is closely aligned with Ofsted’s expectations for personal growth and preparation for life in modern Britain.

Through enrichment, our students:

  • Develop character – including resilience, confidence and independence.
  • Gain cultural capital – broadening their understanding of the world around them.
  • Become ready for adult life – making informed choices and contributing positively to society.

Every experience adds to their Abbey Backpack – knowledge, skills and values they will carry with them for life.
